Entertainment on the Road Tips

Find a Museum for any Interest. Most cities offer a number of museums with exhibits to please just about everyone. Whether your interest is in art, cars, music, nature or history, you can find something to please your senses and increase your knowledge. Visit www.MuseumsUSA.org for a listing of museums by state.

Go Where the Locals Go. Ask the front desk staff of your hotel for local entertainment ideas. Miniature golf is always a fun family event and movie theaters can offer a reprieve from bad weather. Additionally, there may be some local festivals that you may not be aware of until you ask.

Early Bird Saves the Most. When attending a movie or theater performances, check into the matinee times and prices. They are often much cheaper than the evening showings, yet the content and actors are the same.

Student/Senior Discounts. Many discounts are available to students and seniors. Be sure to inquire or check out the website ahead of time.

Make Time for Local, Live Theaters. Ask about local, live theater performances as they often have very talented actors and perform many popular plays. Not only will you save a great deal of money by supporting the smaller theaters, but many of these actors go on to make it to the big time.

Find a Zoo. City zoos are a great way to get some good exercise and learn about animals local to that geographical location. For a listing of zoos by state, visit www.GoodZoos.com.

Enjoy Nature. There are almost 400 national parks in the United States covering more than 84 million acres. If you are searching for a national park on your vacation, go to www.NPS.gov for a complete listing.

Already a Member? If you really want to save money, consider joining your local museums or zoo. These organizations often have reciprocal privileges at other museums, science centers, and zoos throughout the country that are discounted or offered for free to members.

Make the Most of the Amusement Park. Be sure to check online first to see if there are any discount or early-admission tickets offered. The website will also be able to tell you what kind of weather you can expect, if coolers and outside food are allowed, and the timing of various performances.

Check Out the Local Newspapers Before You Leave. Before heading out, go online to the newspaper at your destination to hunt for special promotions and events. Maybe there's an art festival or music festival occurring at the same time you will be there. Also, many restaurants offer specials through their local papers. You can also find coupons for attractions like zoos, theme parks, and museums.
